The Wadi Rum Desert Hotel That Looks Like It Landed from Another Planet

Geodesic pods, red desert silence, and a sky full of stars in one of Earth’s most otherworldly landscapes: Wadi Rum UFO Luxotel is one of Jordan’s most unusual hotels in the heart of the Wadi Rum desert.

Wadi Rum doesn’t look like Earth. NASA has used it as a Mars stand-in for research. Hollywood has used it as a Mars stand-in for films, including The Martian. Wadi Rum UFO Luxotel leans fully into this. The pods are called pods and the aesthetic is extraterrestrial.

Wadi Rum UFO Luxotel: The Property

UFO Luxotel sits inside the Wadi Rum Protected Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering nearly 720 square kilometers of desert valley in southern Jordan. The camp is made up of geodesic dome pods, hard-surface, climate-controlled, and elevated on wooden decking above the desert floor, spread across the red sand with nothing but rock formations and open sky in every direction.

The Pods at Wadi Rum UFO Luxotel

Each pod is a self-contained bubble: curved walls of quilted fabric, a premium king bed, private en-suite bathroom with bidet, slippers, hairdryer, and toiletries, climate control, and a private terrace with seating. The geometric window panel at the front of each pod faces the desert directly. The view from the bed is red sand and sandstone cliffs. At night, that same window becomes a star map. There is no light pollution out here and the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye.

Just outside the pod entrance facing the open desert, there’s a hammock on the terrace and it is genuinely difficult to get out of once the sun starts dropping toward the rocks.

The Wadi Rum UFO Luxotel Experience

Evenings center on a traditional Bedouin dinner, a generous spread served under the desert sky, prepared fresh daily. Breakfast is equally lavish. Beyond the camp itself, guided desert tours take guests deeper into Wadi Rum: jeep excursions across the valley floor, camel rides, rock climbing, and stargazing sessions led by local guides who know this landscape the way city people know their neighborhoods. The owner runs the property with real personal attention, and the experience reflects that.

Who It’s For

Travelers who want an experience that has no equivalent anywhere else. UFO Luxotel is not a hotel with a view. It is a landscape you sleep inside. Fly into Amman, drive three hours south to Wadi Rum village, and arrange transfer from there. Combine it with Petra, two hours north, for one of the most visually complete itineraries Jordan offers.

Best Time to Visit

October through April is the window to aim for. Desert temperatures are comfortable during the day, cool enough at night to make the pod feel like exactly the right place to be, and the skies are at their clearest.

The Numbers

Pods start from approximately $167 USD per night, with buffet breakfast and a traditional Bedouin dinner included. UFO Luxotel sits inside the Wadi Rum Protected Area, three hours south of Amman and two hours from Petra. Sister property Bubble Luxotel operates next door with a similar concept and shared amenities.
