This Hotel in Pakistan’s Hunza Valley Is Worth The Trip Alone
Zen by the Lake: a boutique retreat on the edge of Attabad Lake, where the turquoise water, the Karakoram peaks, and two hosts who genuinely care make this the standout stay in northern Pakistan.

Attabad Lake didn’t exist before 2010. A landslide created it almost overnight, flooding villages and reshaping the valley floor entirely. Today that same accidental lake, electric turquoise against the grey rock walls of the Karakoram, is one of the most visually arresting places in Pakistan. Zen by the Lake sits right on its edge, and the view from your room makes the long road to get here feel like the easiest decision you ever made.

Zen by the Lake: The Property
This is a passion project by husband and wife Rabia and Tanveer, who left successful corporate careers to build something worth staying in. Every stone was hand-carved. Every design choice is intentional. The rooms come with private balconies, air conditioning, bathrobes, and views that every single guest describes as better in person than in any photograph. It is simply the best accommodation on Attabad Lake.

The Zen by the Lake Experience
The restaurant serves à la carte lunches and dinners across Pakistani, continental, and Chinese cuisines, with breakfast included each morning. The surrounding villages offer traditional crafts and culture that most Pakistan itineraries blow straight past. Evenings bring lakeside bonfires.

The property was built deliberately small, across a large footprint of land, to keep it private and low-impact. That restraint is part of what makes it feel so exceptional.

Who It’s For
Anyone visiting Hunza who wants to indulge in affordable lakeside luxury. Fly into Skardu or Gilgit, both airports connect to this stretch of the Karakoram — and make Zen your base. Come for two nights minimum. Leave wishing you had booked three.
