The Luxury Hotel Hidden Inside Kosovo’s Most Dramatic Canyon

Grand Hotel Belushi has become one of Kosovo’s most impressive luxury hotels, combining mountain scenery, wellness experiences, and direct access to Rugova Gorge. Three brothers, one who bet on their homeland — and a luxury mountain escape that Kosovo didn’t know it needed.

Deep in the gorge of Bjeshkët e Nemuna , the mountains making Kosovo’s wildest, most untouched corner, Grand Hotel Belushi was never supposed to exist. The Shala Belushi brothers, three siblings who had built their lives in Austria, looked at the raw canyon landscape outside Peja and saw something most people missed: the makings of a world-class luxury destination. What they built in Shkrel, in the heart of Rugova, is the kind of property that makes you reconsider everything you thought you knew about a stay in the Balkans.

Grand Hotel Belushi: The Property

Grand Hotel Belushi is a five-star resort and spa sitting at the gateway to Rugova Gorge, one of the most dramatic natural landscapes in the Western Balkans. The property offers rooms and suites ranging from well-appointed standard rooms (26–30m²) to the Family Suite (65m²) and a Presidential Suite (80m²) with a full balcony facing the mountains. Every room at the property is designed with the same principle: the view should do as much work as the interior. Balconies overlook the canyon and the lobby serves elegance.

The Grand Hotel Belushi Experience

The spa and wellness center is the property’s cherry on top. An indoor pool with floor-to-ceiling views of the Rugova mountains anchors the experience, accompanied by a jacuzzi, steam room, three types of saunas (including a bio sauna), a dedicated salt chamber, a relaxation lounge, and a full massage menu spanning therapeutic, relaxing, and aromatherapy treatments. It is a complete wellness program housed inside a mountain hotel, and an unexpectedly sophisticated one for a destination that most of the world has yet to discover.

Outside, Rugova delivers everything the brothers wagered on. Rugova Gorge trails wind through cliff faces and canyon walls. Rock climbing routes run across difficulty levels. Day trips reach Liqeni Lake for picnicking and quiet. And in Peja itself, the 13th-century Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate of Peć —  a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is among the most significant religious monuments in the Balkans.

Dining at Grand Hotel Belushi

The restaurant brings Kosovar and regional cuisine into a thoughtfully designed dining room. Breakfast is a full buffet with halal, American, and continental options. The terrace serves panoramic views and watching the sun drop behind the canyon walls at some point during your stay is a must.

Who It’s For

Travelers who want to experience Kosovo beyond Pristina. Couples looking for a mountain escape with a serious spa. For families, the suites accommodate up to four and the setting is as safe and scenically dramatic as anywhere in Europe. And anyone who has been waiting for a reason to finally visit a country that has spent years being one of the continent’s best-kept secrets.

Best Time to Visit

Rugova is a year-round destination, but the sweet spot is late spring through early fall (May to October), when the canyon trails are open, the mountain air is crisp, and the views from the terrace are at their most dramatic. Summer brings long days and ideal conditions for hiking and exploring Peja. Winter transforms the area into a snow-covered alpine escape, the spa and indoor pool hit different when there’s snow on the mountains outside.
