The Best Place to Stay in Djibouti Isn’t a Resort — It’s a Working Farm

Eighty kilometers from Lac Abbé and a world away from anything you would expect to find in Djibouti, The Neem Farm is exactly what its name promises. It is a working agricultural oasis along a wadi in the village of As Eyla. Mango trees, date palms, papaya, lemon trees, and market gardens full of carrots, tomatoes, and eggplants grow here. Chickens, horses, cows, and goats roam the grounds. It is improbable, and completely unforgettable.

The Neem Farm: The Property
Accommodation comes in two forms. A Lodge in the heart of the farm sleeping up to 12, and six Suites tucked into the Palmeraie. The suites each have a double bed, air conditioning, private shower and bathroom, and a video projector loaded with over 100 films for nights when the stars come out to play. The lodge is ideal for groups; the suites are perfect for couples or families. Solar and wind energy power the property by day, with a generator running the air conditioning at night.

The Neem Farm Experience
Almost everything on your plate comes from the farm itself. Meals are served in the garden dining room beside the main swimming basin, or at the Table d’Okapi, a long wooden table under giant trees. Buggy excursions depart for Lac Abbé, ancient rock paintings at Antakari and Ali Daba, and the archaeological sites of Asa Koma. Camel rides, mountain bikes, and walking tours through the As Eyla gardens round out the days. The farm also supports a women’s artisan cooperative from the village, definitely worth exploring before you leave.

Who It’s For
Travelers who want to go deeper into Djibouti beyond the city and the coast. The farm sits about three hours from Djibouti City and makes the ideal base for exploring Lac Abbé and the interior. It also works beautifully as a standalone escape, arriving to this kind of green abundance in one of the driest countries on earth is an experience in itself.
